Rio de Janeiro

One of the most important sites for the diffusion of psychoanalysis in Latin America, Rio de Janeiro, just like its neighboring capital city of São Paulo, is distinctive by the presence of psychoanalysis in popular culture, and its connections to the medical establishment. In Rio de Janeiro, we will privilege sites where psychoanalysis encounters other systems of thought and emancipatory movements. One important part of this study contemplated by our psychosocial ethnography will engage with a relatively recent movement in Brazil, that of ‘psychoanalysis in the street’ [psicanálise na rua], offering psychoanalysis to the community or outside the traditional space of the consulting room.
