Situated at the Freud Museum, amongst a psychoanalytic history that we can still reach out and touch, this workshop asks how the idea of a living archive can maintain a dynamism that keeps it relevant to contemporary social movements and developments.

To prompt discussion, we will introduce some items from the FREEPSY Free Clinics Archive, a collection of materials held at The Mayday Rooms amongst many other archives of social movements, marginal cultures and radical practices.

In groups, using the archive materials as a prompt, we will discuss and think through the contemporary psychoanalytic archive. As the notion of the traditional archive dismantles, we’ll also look at how this reconfiguration is shifting the archive’s mode from exclusivity to inclusivity — a central theme shared with the free clinics.

Join us as we ask how the concept of a living archive can reflect the social, political and radical approaches to psychoanalytic practice, and keep our recent past from becoming solidified and closed off to the future.
