In 2025, the FREEPSY research team created an online database of more than 250 free psychoanalytic clinics around the world. We started to connect the free clinics through online meetings in different languages.

In 2026, we aim to intensify the connections between the free clinics, starting with an online, multi-lingual ‘skill sharing’ meeting. This will address common themes and challenges identified in our earlier network meetings and the FREEPSY research team’s ethnographic research: how does transference change in a free clinic where there is little or no monetary fee, the clinic itself might not be a physical building, and the analyst could vary from week to week? What are the economics of ‘free’ clinics in neoliberal, capitalist economies? What psychoanalytic theory do the clinics draw on, and what new theory is being developed out of the clinics? How does one go about setting up a free clinic from scratch?
Established free clinics will start the discussion by sharing some of the challenges and concerns that are current for them. An open, multi-lingual discussion will follow.
The FREEPSY research team has also been building a visual cartography using the free clinics’ social media and web feeds. You are warmly invited to bring an image (or two) representing your clinic to the meeting, to add to this visual cartography.
An account of our visual cartography exercise at FREEPSY can be found here.
