Call for Papers: Composing with Spielrein – Contemporary Applications of Sabina Spielrein’s Work

Online Conference, September 5th and 6th 2026

We would like to invite all those interested in the work of Sabina Spielrein and early women analysts to contribute to the upcoming conference organised by one of our FREEPSY team members and other colleagues at the University of Essex. The conference explores the extraordinary thinking of Sabina Spielrein, developing her pioneering legacy in the world of psychoanalysis and beyond.

Papers should integrate Spielrein’s ideas and concepts into your own field of interest in new, innovative ways. Our ambition is to lay the ground for new contributions to knowledge, based on Spielrein’s ideas. We welcome papers discussing the relevance of Spielrein’s work in contemporary clinical settings, but also in relation to philosophy, sociology, childhood studies, gender studies, and the arts. Fields under consideration include: relational psychoanalysis, psychosocial studies, language and child development, the sociology of childhood, gender studies as well as evolutional biology and neurology.

The conference is organized by the Centre of Childhood Studies, Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex, in collaboration with the International Association for Spielrein Studies.

Speakers include: Fátima Caropreso, Katalin Nóra Faluvégi, John Launer, Klara Naszkowska, Esther Rapoport, Ana Tomčić and Renata Udler Cromberg

Abstracts (150 words) should be sent to ana.tomcic@essex.ac.uk by February 10th 2026. We plan to publish the conference contributions in an edited volume. We look forward to seeing you there!
